Caturday Art: Whiskered Wanderer

It's probably pretty obvious that my furbabies, and animals in general, are sort of a big inspiration for my drawings. Believe it or not, I do find inspiration in other sources as well, such as books, movies, music, and weirdly random conversations with my sister. The particular drawing I created for today's Caturday Art blog hop, hosted by Athena, was inspired by one of my favorite books. Oh, and one of my furbabies, of course.

As I've said in the past, I love to read. And, as I've admitted in the past, I love me some fantasy. My dad's in large part to thank for this. One of the first memories I can recall is my dad reading The Hobbit to me as a bedtime story when I was a small child. Since then, I've loved J.R.R. Tolkien and the world he created in Middle-Earth. (Honestly, I'd live in the Shire in a heartbeat, if only I could find the darn place.) There's also the fact that I grew up with a giant map of Middle-Earth hanging on the wall of my childhood playroom. Oh, and my dad just happened to have drawn said map by hand himself. (Was my dad fan-boying Tolkien or what?)

Before I get any more long-winded and bore you to tears, let me get to the point. I am a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings. While picking an absolute favorite passage or quote from this tome of a series would be impossible, I can tell you that one of my favorite excerpts from the famous trilogy is the following poem:

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

Profound stuff, huh? Well, for today's Caturday Art drawing, I exploited my girl Thimble to illustrate my favorite line of that above poem.

If I'm remembering correctly, I've mentioned before that my girl Thimble has a habit of wandering the halls of our home every night. During her wanderings, she'll converse with walls and closet doors, find and bat at toys that cross her path, swat at any fursibs that pass by, and of course wander and wander some more. The quote as illustrated above always come to my mind whenever Thimble starts on her nightly wanderings. After all, the determined look on her adorable face always tells me that my little whiskered wanderer has a purpose. So, long story shot, this drawing happened.

Are any of our furiends out there wanders?

Happy Caturday!

Our Tip of the Day:
You know your furbaby best. That's why, if you see your furbaby showing any signs abnormal to them, be sure to monitor them, and have them seen by their vet if you're concerned. Keep in mind, though, that abnormal signs and symptoms aren't limited to things like vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Even hyperactivity could potentially be a cause for deeper concern. Again, since you know your furbaby best, if you think that they are being uncharacteristically active or restless, be sure to stay on top of that. Any number of ailments can cause hyperactivity or restlessness, including discomfort, pain, certain poisons, senility or cognitive dysfunction, and hyperthyroidism.

Oh Thimble, it is fun to wander. A lot of us do like to wander. It is one of Two Two's favorite things to do in the house. And some of the outside cats do wander off at times. Some come back and three or four have not come back which is sad but I do like them to be able to live the lives that they enjoy.

That is a great drawing of Thimble, I hope you add it to your Etsy store. I have seen that saying with photos of feral cats to remind people that ferals are just living their lives and not "lost". Your father sounds like a very sweet man and an excellent Dad too. Great tip, we do need to look for changes in a cat's behavior because they are so good at not telling us when they are ill.

I love that your dad instilled in you that sense of wonder and imagination. He sounds like an awesome guy.

Thimble, we love the drawing Mom did of you. Nothing wrong with a little wandering. Our angel Moosey used to "go on patrol" in the house every night before settling in to sleep with us.

Hugs!

This picture is just wonderful! The quote is so fitting for Thimble and her purposeful wanderings. That is amazing that your dad drew a map of Middle-Earth!

We've never had wanderers, but Annie paces around and around the house when she's hungry. Your tip is good. I never thought about hyperactivity. Bottom line is if kitty is acting differently, pay attention.

Love this drawing with sweet Thimble and the pink sky. Our Angel Thelma used to be up at night when we were all asleep. Mom would hear her downstairs playing and meowing to the shadows. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

Love the way Thimble looks in the drawing. TW knows me better than anyone. The other morning she knew I was going to get an asthma attack. She could tell the night before. She axed Pop how I was while he was getting ready for work and he said fine. A few hours later I had the attack. She can sense it but she's not real good at stopping it.

That is a sweet picture. I don't wander, but I do patrol my garden. Eric was the wanderer. He used to go across the fields to the neighbouring farm. It was because of that my dad built the high prison fence to keep us both in the garden.

Very cute drawing. We are all very quiet at night. On rare occasions, brofur Ocean plays a little past bedtime. Mom always gets up before we do in the morning.

Oh, I just love that. The way you interpret your beloved pets in your artwork is incredibly special.

That is reminding M of the song "The Happy Wanderer!" Now she's going to have that playing in her head all night. Love how you interpret your pets in your artwork too. Melissa is right on in her statement above.

I used to have a cat named Scratches and I'd sometimes hear him wandering around at night.

Your advice for today is excellent. Scratches was a sickly cat and was a regular visitor to the vet since the day I brought him home as a kitten. I remember bringing him once when not all seemed right. The vet seemed to think I was an overly concerned mama but he ran blood tests to appease me and discovered my cat was having liver problems. If I hadn't been watching him so closely it might have been too late by the time I noticed something remiss. Now I watch Chico like a hawk.
