Our Tip of the Day:

It can be very beneficial to know the normal, healthy vital signs of a cat. A normal heart rate for a cat is 140 to 220 beats per minute, with a relaxed cat falling on the lower end of that. The respiration rate of a healthy cat should be between 20 and 40 breaths per minute, and, as with heart rate, a relaxed cat will have a rate on the lower end of that. Rectal temperatures in cats should be between 100 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are concerned about you kitty's behavior or health, such as in the case of potential toxin ingestion, it may be beneficial or necessary for you to check your cat's vitals at home. If need be, you can check your cat's heart rate by placing your hand on their chest right behind a front leg, check their respiration weight by observing the rising and falling of their chest, and carefully check rectal temperature using a digital thermometer (with its probe coated with Vaseline as a lubricant). If any of your cat's vital signs fall below or above the normal range, especially if by more than just a small margin, contact your veterinarian.
