Yet Another Treeside Thankful Thimble Thursday

Hello and happy Thursday, friends! You better believe Thimble is here for Angel Brian's Thankful Thursday Blog Hop.

Today, Thimble is yet again grateful that our Christmas trees are still up. She's displaying that fact with a couple of bloopers, because the kitties have been giving me plenty of those these days.

That one up there isn't as much of a blooper as the second photo, which shows a blurry Thimble happily rubbing her cute little face against the cat tree beside that there Christmas tree.

Thimble is that cat who rubs her face on anything and everything. After all, she loves everything and everyone, and so she indeed rubs against everything and everyone. If you visited our house, she'd probably give you one of her famous head bonks.

Happy Thursday, friends!

Now, let's share the fill-in statements for tomorrow's Friendly Fill-Ins challenge. My amazing co-host Ellen of 15andmeowing came up with the first two, and I came up with the second two.

1. I will keep my old _________ over a new one any day.

2. My theme song for the year is _________.

3. _________ is the most relaxing part of my day.

4. _________ is the most stressful part of my day.

We'll see you tomorrow, friends!

Festive Flashback Doodles of the Day

We've mentioned how we're extending the Christmas season a bit. Either tomorrow or Saturday we'll finally be sharing the purrfect goodies our Secret Santa Paws sent us, since we're getting some camera issues sorted out. So, since we still have that to share in the next couple of days, we're also still sharing other Christmas fun. Today's doodles are therefore a couple old festive flashbacks from many years ago. They're ones I'd love to recreate in my slightly newer drawing style, but even so, here they are.

Tip of the Day

Yet another tip related to outdoor cat shelters is to ensure that the shelter is heavy enough to stay put, such as in heavy winds. Shelters made out of wood or other heavy material will of course be more likely to stay put in high winds. If you have a makeshift or any form of lightweight shelter, such as one made from plastic or Sytrofoam, do consider placing something heavy, yet also safe and secure, on top of it. This could be a sheet of plywood, or anything similar that can safely and securely weigh down a lightweight shelter. In some instances, you also might be able to find ways to tether, bolt, or in some way secure a shelter in place. The weight of an outdoor cat shelter is yet another factor to keep in mind when caring for ferals, so take this into consideration and ensure that any shelter you put out is one that will not blow away in the event of a stormy or windy day.

Tonks Tuesday: Festive Photo Fails

As we mentioned yesterday, we have a couple more days of Christmas posts to share. We're sorry for anyone who's truly done with Christmas, but we indeed have a bit left to give. For today, Tonks wanted to share some festive photos that this here human messed up. First up, Tonks's novice photographer of a mom nearly cut off the poor calico's face.

Then, when Tonks's mom tried to remedy that, all the silly human managed was a blurry shot.

We almost didn't share these at all, but if this here human had done better and the photos had turned out as planned, they would have been extra cute shots of Tonks. So, the little calico wanted you all to see the attempts.

Happy Tuesday, friends!

Tip of the Day

Today's discussion on shelters for outdoor ferals in the winter is to make sure you regularly check said shelters, to ensure that they are in good condition. Such checks should include looking for leaks and making sure that the shelter is dry inside. It is also, of course, important to look for broken or loose parts and pieces. These sorts of checks are especially important after storms or high winds, in order to ensure that no parts of the shelter broke loose or are posing a risk to the cats using the shelter.

In addition to regularly checking outdoor cat shelters for damage, also check to make sure that the shelters are clean and as sanitary as possible. If you are using straw as bedding in the shelter, regularly check it for dirt or excrement, and determine if it needs replaced or replenished. If cloth bedding material is being used, regularly check to make sure that it is dry and clean, and remedy it if it is not. There are many factors that go into maintaining a comfortable and clean shelter for ferals, also of course including food availability. So, if you are caring for outdoor cats, try to regularly check shelters to ensure that all is well and safe for potential inhabitants.

Friendly Fill-Ins and Festive Eddy

Hello, friends! Sorry for yet another exceptionally late post. Evan's been feeling a lot better lately after starting on antibiotics for his UTI, but now poor pup Astrid is having a rough time. She's not giving us very clear indicators and we're not sure if she's bothered by her osteoarthritis, her stomach or intestines, or something else, but she's just not been herself since late last night. Between her osteoarthritis and her old gal eyes not being what they used to be, she's even more of a klutz than she was in her youth, and she did trip over the sidewalk and fall on her walk yesterday. She didn't seem bothered at the time, but we're wondering if that fall is hurting her now, and so she's been given some pain meds. When she has good days we still see hints of young and hyperactive Astrid in there, and she'll still sometimes take us on long walks and all that wonderful jazz, but she's also almost 12 and certainly has days that indicate that. Today is one of those days for the poor girl. If she continues to act like she's not feeling her old gal best, she'll get to visit the vet. Not that she'd mind too much, though, since she always gets an ice cream pup cup from Dairy Queen after her vet visits.

Now, shall we get to the Friendly Fill-Ins challenge? We shall, and we'd love for you to join us. My amazing co-host Ellen of 15andmeowing came up with the first two fill-in statements, and I came up with the second two.

1. _________, _________, and _________ are on my to-do list this month.

2. If I hear _________ one more time I will scream.

3. All I want for Christmas is _________.

4. _________ is my favorite holiday scent.

My answers are below in bold.

1. Creating festive art, doing some festive baking, and enjoying the Christmas season with my family are on my to-do list this month.
(I have a lot of random stuff on my to-do list for December, some being general chores and others of course relating to Christmas. Those three I listed above are just the first ones that popped into my head.)

2. If I hear Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" one more time I will scream.
(Maybe I wouldn't despise this tune so much if every station playing Christmas music didn't pick this one for every other song.)

3. All I want for Christmas is health and happiness for my furry and human family.
(I actually chose this fill-in statement after I saw Ellen's #2, because I knew immediately what my answer would be for that one. And even though I can't stand that song, its title still makes for a nice fill-in. My fill-in answer here is pretty self-explanatory, and I'm sure it's true for most of us.)

4. Peppermint is my favorite holiday scent.
(Even better if you mix some chocolate with that peppermint.)

Now it's your turn!

You are also welcome to complete the fill-ins in the comments below,

I don't recall Eddy sharing bloopers for last week's official blooper blog hop, so how about some today? These were snapped while Eddy "helped" me decorate her favorite Christmas tree last Friday.

If this artificial tree looks all janky, it's because Eddy knocks out so many limbs from it on a regular basis that, at this point, I just stick fallen limbs in random places. The tree's shape is all over the place, but it's still Eddy's favorite festive thing.

Have a festive Friday, friends!

Tip of the Day

Our last Christmas tree tip relates to real trees and how they might affect your furbaby. If you have a real tree, be cautious of letting your kitty or pup drink from any accessible water in the tree stand. It is possible that certain chemicals, such as fertilizers or even pesticides, are used in some tree lots. Some of these chemicals can then end up in the water that the tree is resting in, and this can potentially lead to toxic side effects for your furbaby. Another concern relates to stagnant water in the tree stand, which can harbor potentially harmful bacteria. In addition, be careful of pine needles falling from real trees, and even artificial trees, for that matter. These needles are pointy and sharp, and if consumed this can potentially lead to internal damage. So, keep that tree water covered or somehow out of reach, and keep those fallen pine needles cleaned up, so that your furbaby and the Christmas tree can live in harmony.

Sunday Selfie Bloopers

Today's selfies are bloopers from an overenthusiastic Thimble. Though they be bloopers, Thimble and I kind of love them, and so we're sharing them with you all.

Thimble hopes you all enjoyed her bloopery attempts at selfies!

Tip of the Day

Today's pet parenting hack of a tip is one to help you sleep better at night. Does your kitty or pup ever wake you up during the night, perhaps seemingly bored or hungry? The first step in a case such as this is of course to make sure there is no medical explanation. If your furbaby is indeed healthy, though, and they simply wake you in the middle of the night for some playtime or a midnight snack, then there are a couple of simple things you can do to try to combat this.

First, you can do a bit of a pre-bedtime play session with them. One of the last things you do before you go to bed can be a game of fetch, perhaps a little fun with a wand toy, or anything that your furbaby finds fun and that expends their energy. This will help tire your furbaby out, and will hopefully help satisfy their desire to play so that they can sleep through the night.

Second, in the case that your furbaby wakes you up in the middle of the night out of hunger, perhaps save their last meal of the day for right before bed. Fill their bowl just before you go to bed, so that they will go to bed with a full stomach. If needed and possible, you can also make this nighttime meal their largest of the day, to even further satisfy them and their stomach. In some cases, this is all it takes to help keep those hungry furbabies satiated until their breakfast.

Just like us, our furbabies are not immune to restless nights or a desire for a midnight snack. If a medical concern has been ruled out, then try to find a way to help both you and your furbaby sleep through the night. Satisfying the play or hunger drive just before bed may be all that is needed.

Bloopers on Tuesday With Tonks

Tonks was jealous that Eddy got to share some bloopers on Friday, especially since Tonks snapped some perfectly blurry shots while we put together our new cat tree recently.

Those aren't too bad, just a tad bit blurry. But, how about these glorious shots?

Eddy is still the blooper queen at our house, but Tonks comes in as a close second. Does that make her the blooper princess here?

Happy Tuesday, friends!

Flashback Doodle of the Day

I was going to share one of our new winter doodles today, but I'm trying to get back to a set schedule for when I share new doodles and when I share flashback doodles. I used to share flashback doodles on Tuesdays and Fridays, so I'm going to try to get back to that. Since my work at my full-time job has been a bit crazy lately and I have a bit less time to draw than I'd like, I may share three flashback and four new doodles each week, and in that case the other flashback doodle day would likely be Sunday. Anyway, since today's Tuesday, I decided to share a flashback doodle. Todays' flashback doodle is one from a series I shared last year, and this series contained sort of gothic winter doodles. The next series of new doodles I'm working on was inspired by these somewhat gothic winter doodles from last year, so it made sense to me to go ahead and start sharing these doodles from last year as flashbacks. So, after all that rambling, here's one of those doodles from last year.

Tip of the Day

With February being Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, we are giving some tips on this significant topic over the next couple of days. Today, we have a few words on how a kitty or pup's health can benefit from being spayed or neutered. Just to give a couple of examples, spaying a female cat or dog can eliminate the risk of uterine cancer or infection, and can reduce the risk of mammary cancer. For male cats and dogs, neutering can eliminate the concern of testicular cancer and can reduce the risk of diseases of the prostate. Of course, pregnancy itself can be risky, so a spayed cat or dog is also free of unexpected pregnancy and the dangers that come with it. There are a great many other health benefits that can potentially result from having a cat or dog spayed or neutered. Due to their reduced risks of various diseases, spayed or neutered cats and dogs are sometimes more likely to live longer, healthier lives. So, for the above reasons and more, spay and neuter your pets! And, as we mentioned yesterday, also consider assisting with or donating to the neutering efforts of feral colonies, so that these furbabies can also live as healthy of lives as possible.

Photo Fails

It's time for the Pet Photo Fails! Blog Hop, hosted by Mudpie and Melissa of Melissa's Mochas, Mysteries, & Meows

This hop usually takes place on the last Friday of each month, but since this Friday is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, our hosts have moved the blooper blog hop to today. Our blooper queen Eddy is perfectly fine with that, as she's ready to share bloopers any day of the week. And, since Wednesday is usually the day when pup Astrid gets to be the star of our blog, she'll also be sharing some bloopers.

Shall we begin with Eddy, our resident blooper queen who has almost zero ability to sit still for the camera? We'll pretend these bloopers are all Eddy's doing and that they have nothing to do with this here human's inability to get proper focus or lighting for an action shot. Okay? Okay.

I quite like these bloopers of Eddy. They're terrible quality, don't get me wrong, but they show off her sweet personality. When I asked her to pose for the camera, she instead started rubbing her cute little cheek on her cat tree. Eddy is afraid of essentially every person on this earth, but she loves her mommy, and that makes me very happy.

Now, how about a couple bloopers from pup Astrid?

What a nice shot of Astrid's eyebrows, don't you think?

Truth be told, Astrid probably has the fewest bloopers of all the furbabies in the house. This is because she is a pro at just turning into a pouting statue in front of the camera. Every once in a while, though, she's like the kitties and gets curious enough to shove her nose in the camera's business during a photo shoot, which is exactly what she did in the bloopers above.

Happy Wednesday to all!

Flashback Doodles of the Day

We're sharing mostly flashback doodles for a week or two while I work on some writing projects and some upcoming autumnal series of doodles. The flashback doodles we've been sharing this week have all been from 2018 and have all also starred furry friends scrawling away. Today we're sharing two more flashbacks from that exact same 2018 series, these two doodles starring Eddy and Astrid.

Did you know?

Did you know many experts believe that domestication has led to changes in the anatomy of canine eyebrows? Dogs don't have eyebrows in the sense that humans do, but some dogs do have eyebrow-like markings, and all of them of course have muscles in the brow area. When it comes to those brows, canine facial anatomy has evolved to make them better able to communicate with humans. Human body language involves movement of the brow, and now canine body language essentially does as well. As one major example, during some interactions with humans, domesticated dogs will move the inner muscles of their brow in a manner that causes their eyes to look bigger, more puppy-like, and even a bit sad. Have you ever heard of, witnessed, or been victim to "puppy dog eyes"? Some studies have revealed that "puppy dog eyes" is a not a thing that exists in wolves, and that wolves do not have the same musculature of the brow as domesticated dogs. For such reasons, many experts believe the "puppy dog eyes" expression is at least in part a result of domestication and evolution, as this expression enabled dogs to appeal to humans, and to get what they want from said humans.

Tonks Outtakes on Tuesday

Tonks was jealous that Eddy as well as Astrid will be sharing bloopers tomorrow for Mudpie and Melissa's Pet Photo Fails! Blog Hop (our fantastic hosts moved this fun hop from Friday to tomorrow so that Rainbow Bridge Bridge Remembrance Day can be honored on Friday). So, Tonks decided to snap and share some bloopers of herself today. Let's be real, though, these were more the fault of this here photographer, who failed to focus the camera on the desired subject. Well, that's to blame on top of Tonks's desire to charge the camera rather than pose for it.

Well, we certainly failed to get a good shot of Tonks's cute little eye. Did we fare any better trying to snap a shot of her cute little chin?

No, no we did not.

Have a terrific Tuesday, friends!

Flashback Doodle of the Day

We're sharing some extra flashback doodles while I work on writing projects and while I eagerly get a head start on my autumn and Halloween doodles. The first series of flashback doodles I've been sharing is from 2018, and it's all about writing. You know, like what this little kitty is doing.

Tip of the Day

We've mentioned feline acne on our blog before, but it's been a while, and since this ailment is not terribly uncommon, we thought we'd mention it again. Cats can indeed get acne, largely on their chin. Probably the most common sign of acne in cats is a dirty appearance of the chin, or what might look like blackheads. Some cats might also end up with more severe sores or even a swollen chin or swollen lips. Especially if your cat has a severe case of acne, of course have them seen and treated by a veterinarian. Treatment of acne might very well include a cleaning agent to help heal the acne. Depending on the severity of the acne, as well as perhaps depending on the veterinarian, some cases need treatment as simple as hydrogen peroxide applied to the chin with a cotton ball, while others might involve prescription topical treatment or other prescription medication.

What's more, to treat as well as to prevent feline acne, a change in the type of food and water bowls might be needed. Plastic water bottles are the most likely to lead to feline acne, as plastic can easily develop scratches that can harbor bacteria or other debris that can cause acne. The best types of bowls to use for your kitty's food and water are stainless steel. Glass or ceramic bowls might also help reduce acne. In addition to this, it is of course best to regularly clean the bowls, even if the bowls are stainless steel, glass, or ceramic. So, if your kitty has acne, or if you want to prevent feline acne, invest in stainless steel or perhaps glass or ceramic bowls, and also clean those bowls regularly. If your kitty develops acne, discuss treatment, hygiene, and other options with your veterinarian.

Fantastic Friday

It seems like 2017 is already flying by. I mean, honestly, we're already in the second week of the year! So, we'll start off this second Friday of 2017 with the Friendly Fill-Ins, hosted by the wonderful 15andmeowing and McGuffy's Reader.

Our hosts obviously put great thought into today's fill-ins. See just how great they are?

1. My guiding word for 2017 is _________.
2. _________ class reunion.
3. Truth be told, I am superstitious about _________.
4. Lately, I have been _________.

They put such great thought into these, that my brain had to work extra hard to really do them any semblance of justice.

1. My guiding word for 2017 is can.
(No, I don't mean the kind that soup comes in. I mean the Thomas the Tank Engine I think I can, I think I can, I think I can kind of can. Too often, I settle on simply hoping or wishing for something to happen, or I settle on trying something new, only to give up at the slightest prospect of failure. So now I'm making this the year of can. Life is too short to merely hope and wish, and it's certainly too short to give up on things. So, in areas that I've been slacking, I'm going to tell myself that I can and therefore will succeed. Now, to follow through with that pep talk.)

2. I have never been to a class reunion.
(This year would be my 10-year high school class reunion. There was no 5-year reunion scheduled, and so far I have not heard of any plans for a 10-year reunion. Knowing my old classmates, reunions will probably just sort of fall through the cracks.)

3. Truth be told, I am superstitious about the number 6.
(I am honestly not a very superstitious person. I love black cats, a broken mirror in my house usually just results in a hunt for a bottle of glue, and I honestly look forward to each Friday the 13th. But, then there's the fact that I really just don't like the number 6, especially when it shows up in triplicate. This may have a little something to do with the fact that I am Catholic, and, you know, there's that whole "number of the beast" thing. So, I guess 6 is just not my thing. Which is sort of a bummer, because I was born on the 6th of my birthday month. But that's okay, because I'll manage.)

4. Lately, I have been experimenting with recipes of the (gasp!) healthy sort.
(Remember how I mentioned my New Year's resolution of really trying to eat better? Well, this goes hand-in-hand with that. I love food, especially the sugary sweet  kind. But, honestly, I am learning that there are tons of options for eating healthy, or at least mostly healthy, while also satisfying that sweet tooth and whatnot. My current experimentations involve making "ice cream" out of bananas. Sometimes I feel like a mad scientist in my kitchen.)

Now, we can't forget that today is also the monthly Pet Blogger Bloopers Round-Up, hosted by The Lazy Pit Bull.

Our camera is always chock full of bloopers. Honestly, around here, there are far, far more outtakes available than viable shots. So, we always have to rifle through our bloopers and decide which ones to go with when this day of bloopers rolls around each month.

So, which bloopers did we settle on for today? Well, our bloopers today are all about the eyes. You know, really blurry eyes.

Evan just loves getting all up in the camera's face.

And apparently so does Thimble.

And, OMC, Eddy, how many eyes do you have?!?

Toby went for a bit of eye with a whole lot of nose.

And then there's Astrid, who insisted that her blooper today show off her bone of a balancing act.

Astrid didn't seem as amused as myself about the rabbit cat ears Toby gave her in this shot.
Not to mention Thimble's blatant photobomb.

And how about some more furry faces?

Sometimes random doodles just happen around here, and that's one of those.

Wishing everybuddy a fantastic Friday!

Our Tip of the Day:
Today's tip is perhaps a bit random, and probably pretty logical, but that's how it goes. For today, we want to remind you to do your best to avoid leaving dirty dishes our for your furbabies to feast on. Whether they're on the table, in the sink, or even in an unlatched dishwasher, dirty plates are an invitation to an open buffet to a hungry pup or kitty. What's more, as we've mentioned before, some of the foods we leave behind could be dangerous or even life threatening to our furbabies. Bones are of course a danger, as can be the overconsumption of salt or sugar, and of course those no-no foods such as garlic, onion, grapes, raisins, and chocolate. And also don't forget the unpleasant symptoms and of course potential medical emergencies that could arise from a pup or kitty sneaking in fatty leftovers, or even certain spices and herbs that might not agree with their intestines. That's why, to prevent any issues, always be sure that your leftovers and dirty dishes are immediately removed from your furbaby's reach.

Friday Funday

Today, we have fun.

This time of year, there can be so much hustle and bustle, and it's so easy to exhaust ourselves with it. On top of that are all of the recent losses in this blogging community of ours, with so many angels gaining their wings. Sometimes, in the midst of all of this, one of the most important things you can do is take a deep breath and just let yourself have a little fun. So, that's what we're doing today.

We'll start this off like we always do on Friday, with the fantastic Friendly Fill-Ins challenge, hosted by the fantastic 15andmeowing and McGuffy's Reader.

We were so excited when we first saw the fill-ins for this week, because they're all full of festive fun! Here they are:

1. I love the following Christmas film(s): _________.

2. I don't care for the following Christmas film(s): _________.

3. At the holidays, I cannot resist _________.

4. A favorite holiday memory of mine is _________.

I put on my thinking cap Santa hat, and here's what happened:

1. I love the following Christmas films: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, Elf, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and A Garfield Christmas.
(These are just a few of my favorite Christmas movies and specials that I watch every single year, usually more than once. I also love watching some of the older Christmas specials of some of my favorite television shows. Although perhaps I'm one of the few here who might say this, I love watching the Little House on the Prairie Christmas episodes, because they're festive in such a quaint and simple way.)

2. I don't care for the following Christmas film: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
(I feel like such a Scrooge for giving this answer. To be honest, though, Rudolph's story has always been a bit too sad for my taste. And, although I can't quite put my finger on why, and although I feel terrible saying this, this little film just kind of creeps me out overall.)

3. At the holidays, I cannot resist fudge.
(There's not much more I can say about this. I mean, it's fudge.)

4. A favorite holiday memory of mine is when Frost the Snowman made my life difficult.
(This is a weird one, isn't it? This goes back to when I was in high school and did a lot of babysitting, especially around holidays when parents were off at Christmas parties and the like. One such Christmastime night, I was babysitting for a little girl, and we sat down to watch Frosty the Snowman before her bedtime. We made it all the way to the end, to the scene where Santa Claus gives Karen a lift home, at which point he drops her off, well, on the roof. This is where watching TV with kids can get a bit iffy, because the little girl I was babysitting suddenly gasped, wailed "But how is she going to get in her house from up there?!?", and then proceeded to get teary-eyed with worry. Gee, Santa, thanks for that. How was I supposed to encouragingly say, "Don't worry, sweetie, she'll just slide down that steep, snow-covered roof and pop right inside through that tiny window there." Although I found myself in a bit of a jam on that night all those years ago, I now laugh every time I watch that scene of Frosty.)

Now, on to the next bit of fun. As seems fitting, Eddy will be the star of our contribution to this month's Pet Blogger Bloopers Round-Up, hosted by The Lazy Pit Bull.

Eddy's bloopers started off as far more promising than they look. It began with me walking into my bedroom to find her sitting all prim and proper and perfectly calm on my bed. I thought I'd immortalize that rare image by obtaining photographic evidence, but by the time I whipped out my camera, she instead decided it was time to start clambering up to her favorite spot on the post of my headboard.

Given that she's a cat and all, I thought the process would have involved some semblance of grace. She was just a tad bit lacking in that arena, though.

Looks like an awful lot of work, Eddy, especially given that there's a perfectly good window just one room over.

Whew. You made it, Eddy! Bravo!

Well, with that accomplished, what's up next? How about some art? Some Christmas art? Maybe a panda in a Santa hat?

This human here loves her some panda bear, which is probably why this was one of the first ornaments I drew this season. This little guy wishes you a beary merry Christmas!

And you know what other fun news we have to share with you today? We recently got a little something special in the mail!

The furbabies around here think this mom of theirs is a real party pooper, though, because she decided to make them wait until just a little closer to Christmas to open up and delve into the goodies inside that glorious box. That being said, we do now know the identity of our Secret Santa Paws! But, we're going to make you all wait and see who it is, because we're cruel like that. Our Secret Santa Paws know who they are, though, and we want to thank you! Getting this box made our day, our week, our Christmas season! We can't wait to dig in (although we already know that we're going to love what's inside)!

We also got something else fantastic in the mail recently, which you will see tomorrow. So, stay tuned!

We're sending you all warm wishes, and we hope you have yourselves a fun Friday!

***
Our Tip of the Day:
Especially at busy times of the year such as this, always remember that our furbabies can sense and feed off of our own emotions. If you're feeling stressed this holiday season, so will your furbaby. So, although life can sometimes make it tough, always try to stay positive and be happy. After all, that's the best and most healthy state for both you and your furbaby!
