It's Thursday! That means it's time to rhyme. After all, each week Angel Sammy is courteous enough to host the Thoroughly Poetic Thursday challenge.
Our host always shares a photo prompt to guide us as we get poetic. This week's prompt is this absolutely adorable image here:
I've mentioned before how, every October, I always feel compelled to make all of my weekly poems include some Halloween vibes. This spooky season is my favorite, after all, and I just can't help myself. So, I brainstormed how to turn the insanely cute photo above into a Halloween tale. I ended up thinking back to when I was a girl who loved Halloween night and who also of course loved her furry best friends, and then I ended up with this silly little Halloween rhyme:
Fright Night With Friends
Trick or treating had come to an end on Halloween night,
But that didn't mean the night was done offering frights.
Young Colleen, in fact, made sure of that.
"Shall we continue the chills and thrills?" she asked her dog and cat.
Percy and Poppy were her furry friends,
And they seemed perfectly willing to help make sure the spooky night did not end.
The girl straightened the witchy hat atop her head.
"I know just how to stay spooky," she said.
"We'll pick out a book and read a spooky tale!"
In response, Percy and Poppy happily wagged their furry tails.
Colleen visited the nearby shelves and selected a haunted sort of book,
Her furry friends Percy and Poppy following every step she took.
Book in hand, she ran back to the chair by the window.
Percy and Poppy sat on either side of her as off the chair she dangled her booted toes.
She opened the book but then shouted, "Wait!
We're not yet ready to read the first page."
The girl jumped from the chair and turned to the window
She tossed open the curtains and in the crisp window they did billow.
The night outside was spooky and glowed with moonlight.
After all, on that Halloween the sky was filled with a moon full and bright.
Returning to the chair, she struggled to squeeze back in between Percy and Poppy.
She said, "Can't you two share the seat with me? Good golly!"
She again opened the book and opened her mouth to read,
But then instead shouted, "Wait! We can't read a spooky tale without snacking on sweets!"
Colleen jumped off the chair yet again and dashed to the other room.
She returned with an overflowing bucket of candy, as fast as if she'd flown on a broom.
Candy in hand,
She returned to the chair yet again.
She frowned as she took in the sight.
"Are you two going to make me sit on the floor on this cold, spooky night?"
She added, "Can't the three of us share?
It really is a very large chair."
With sighs and grumps, Percy and Poppy unpiled themselves and made room for Colleen.
"Thank you," she said, climbing back into the seat.
Again, she opened the book and the first haunted words almost left her mouth.
Then, though, again she did shout,
"Wait! The pumpkins aren't lit!
Without pumpkins, Halloween has no spirit."
Colleen stood and situated the pumpkins around the chair,
Lighting them with a match she then put out with a wave in the air.
"There!" Colleen said.
"Now we're certainly ready," she added, straightening the pointy hat on her head.
Turning to face the chair she had only briefly left,
A giant sigh puffed out of her chest.
Percy and Poppy had snuggled back up smack dab in the middle of the chair.
There wasn't even a spot for her the width of a hair.
Looking at the two, though, she realized she didn't care.
They were just too cute for her to even dare.
And so Colleen plopped down on the floor in front of the chair.
Outside, the wind howled like a wolf at the moon,
Inside, the girl popped candy into her mouth as she hummed a spooky tune.
Then, finally, she opened the book and read the first line.
Percy and Poppy yawned, and that was perfectly fine.

On Thursday, we also give thanks. Brian's Thankful Thursday Blog Hop makes this easy.
We've been discussing potential dangers and toxins associated with Halloween. Today, we're going to finish that topic with a couple of slightly random yet still relevant Halloween products with which to be cautious. We're referring to items such as glow sticks and fake blood. These items sometimes make appearances on holidays like Halloween, and they might very well contain ingredients that can potentially be toxic to kitties and pups. Glow sticks can especially be dangerous if they are bitten or otherwise punctured, and fake blood can also pose a risk if ingested. Be cautious, therefore, of using these items, as well as any other items that might be dangerous to your furbaby. If you do have any of these items at your home, keep them securely hidden away, so as to prevent any emergencies.

With all of that candy inside of her, no wonder Colleen kept jumping up!
