Sunday Selfie

Today, we want to honor Mauricio of The Cat on My Head. He gained his angel wings on July 17.

Our thoughts, prayers, purrs, and woofs are with Mauricio's mom and dad, as well as with his kitty siblings, the Kitties Blue. Along with the rest of the Kitties Blue, Mauricio has always been a courteous host of The Cat on My Head's Sunday Selfies Blog Hop.

To honor handsome tuxie Mauricio, our resident tuxie Toby is sharing a selfie today.

Toby and all of us here hope Mauricio and his entire family know that he will never be forgotten. Fly high and run free, sweet Mauricio.

One other note we'd like to make is that Toby's photo above is the first in our week of Christmas in July posts. This here human has some favorite Christmas decorations that quite honestly stay up year round, and for this Christmas in July week of posts, the furbabies will be posing with those year round pieces of festive decor. In Toby's selfie above, he's posing with a red Christmas truck (lower left corner of the photo) and a Santa sloth cat toy (upper right corner) that was stolen from the kitties and unfairly kept out of their reach.

Many blessings to all on this Sunday!

Flashback Doodle of the Day

Our first flashback doodle for this week of Christmas in July comes from 2018.

Did you know?

Have you ever heard of a reverse tuxedo cat? It's pretty much what it sounds likes. A classic tuxedo cat, as you all certainly know, has a black back with white on their chest and abdomen as well as sometimes on their face and legs. A reverse tuxedo cat is more so white on their back with black on their sides, abdomen, and/or legs. Classic tuxie cats are somewhat common, whereas reverse tuxedo cats are far more rare. Have you ever shared your life with or met a reverse tuxedo cat?

Caturday Art

Today's doodle is actually this year's birthday card for my mom, the furbabies' beloved Gammy. If you visited us earlier this week, you might know that my mom's birthday was actually on Wednesday. I didn't have her card for this year done yet when I wrote that day's post, though. So, we're sharing it now. This birthday doodle was not only inspired by my mom, but also by just some of her 12 cats.

My parents have some cats who are downright ornery. Four of my parents' orneriest cats are all from one litter, and it's a family joke that these cats go out of their way to troll my mom. The cats playing with and even eating some of the party supplies in today's doodle are indeed based on those real life cats. Surprisingly, the doodled cat throwing a glass of milk to the floor isn't even one of the four aforementioned ornery cats. That doodled cat is based on Trapper, my parents' giant boy who simply likes throwing cups to the floor. He's actually my girl Thimble's litter mate, and Thimble also likes throwing things to the floor. Does any of this even make sense? Probably not.

Happy Caturday to all!

P.S. Over these past couple of weeks I've mentioned how I've apparently developed carpal/cubital tunnel syndrome in my dominant wrist and hand, and so I've been resting my wrist and hand. That's why there have only been a couple of new doodles each week, with the other days having flashback doodles. I had intended and hoped to be back to my usual doodle sharing schedule this upcoming week. Unfortunately, I forgot my wrist brace when I went to work on just one day this past week. On that one day, I made my wrist and hand very unhappy. As a result, I'm going to do just one more week of sharing mostly flashback doodles so that I can rest my wrist and hand and get them to back to the vastly improved state they had previously achieved.

I'm actually quite excited about this upcoming week, if I'm being honest, The plan is that this upcoming week, Sunday through Friday, I'll be sharing flashback Christmas in July doodles from the past 2 years. Then, on Saturday, the 25th of July, I'll be sharing a brand new Christmas in July doodle. After all, that day will be the actual Christmas in July! Then, after that, I truly do hope to be back to my usual doodle schedule, in which there are 5 new and only 2 flashback doodles each week. I can't even tell you how many doodles I have in all states of near completion right now. I love drawing in my sketchbook so much, and I've indeed still been working in my sketchbook when my wrist and hand are feeling roughly normal. At least that means I'll have plenty of brand new doodles to simply top off and easily share after resting my wrist and hand this week.

Okay, that's enough rambling. Yet again, we wish you all a happy Caturday!

Tip of the Day

Today's tip is yet another bit of common sense, and it's related to the doodle we shared today. This tip is to always be aware and cautious of decorations, gifts, and anything else that might be placed around the house for birthdays or other celebrations. Streamers, balloons, ribbons, and cake and other food can all pose risks to cats and dogs. These risks could include choking, bowel obstruction or perforation, adverse food reactions, and a plethora of other potential ailments or injuries. If gifts are present during a celebration, what's inside of them could also tempt some furbabies. For example, food items in a gift box or gift bag might lure in some cats and dogs, and that could lead to a furbaby breaking into the gift and chewing on or eating the actual gift or even gift wrapping material. To avoid all choking hazards, toxicity hazards, and all such dangers, always keep your kitty or pup in mind when preparing for a celebration. If there is any chance at all that your cat or dog will try to attain any parts or pieces of decorations, gifts, or food, then keep all such things well out of their reach. You can keep party goods in a room behind closed doors. Or, if need be, there is the option of keeping your cat or dog behind closed doors in their very own safe room. All in all, if there is any sort of party or celebration planned at your house, think ahead and do what is necessary to keep your furbaby healthy, safe, and sound.

Friendly Fill-Ins

Happy Friday! We're ready for the Friendly Fill-Ins challenge. Are you? If you'd like to participate but missed the fill-in statements yesterday, we'll share them again here. Ellen of 15andmeowing came up with the first two, and I came up with the second two.

1. My latest obsession is _________.

2. I am so over _________.

3. I'm skilled at _________.

4. I'm not very good at _________.

My answers are below in bold.

1. My latest obsession is the show Parks and Recreation.
(Has anyone seen this show? It's a comedy that first aired quite a few years ago. Though I enjoy the occasional comedy show, I'm admittedly kind of picky when it comes to what will make me laugh. I never thought I'd enjoy the show Parks and Recreation, and I remember even seeing a clip of an episode a few years ago and not being impressed. I was at my parents' house the other day, though, and they had this show on. I ended up watching a number of episodes with them and really enjoyed it, and now I've made it through almost all 7 seasons on Netflix. What's more, there have been quite a few episodes involving animals, with one of the regulars being a 3-legged dog named Champion.)

2. I am so over 2020.
(This year is a bust. Is it 2021 yet? Then again, my favorite part of the year is the final quarter of the year, and that has yet to occur. I don't want to miss out on Halloween or Christmas, so hopefully they'll help redeem 2020. Hopefully.)

3. I'm skilled at caring for cats.
(This certainly isn't to say I'm perfect. I'm not. But, I love cats and have shared my life with them since I was a small child. I try to educate myself and do whatever else it takes to ensure I'm doing the best for my cats, and for all cats I meet.)

4. I'm not very good at closing Ziploc bags.
(I realize this is a strangely specific answer, but it's something that has come to light a lot recently. I use Ziploc bags a lot both at home and at my work. I don't know what is wrong with me, but I often struggle to line those suckers up so that they'll close properly. I usually ultimately succeed, but the struggle is real and long sometimes. My sister laughs at me over this.)

Your Eddy fix for today comes in the form of some flashback. More specifically, I recently saw some old photos all starring Eddy's snaggletooth. I love her snaggletooth, so of course I wanted to reshare these.

Eddy and all of us here hope you have a fantastic Friday!

Flashback Doodle of the Day

I was trying to decide which doodle from the past to share and found this one. I actually nearly forgot I doodled this up.

Tip of the Day

On many occasions, we've mentioned the potential toxicity of a number of plants. We've mentioned this when it comes to your garden, neighbors' gardens, and bouquets of flowers that might find their way into your house. Today's tip is to also not forgot about wildflowers. If you're going on a walk or hike with your pet and find yourself in a field, in a park, or anywhere that wildflowers grow, keep in mind that even some of these can be dangerous to cats and dogs. We may not always think much of wildflowers growing amongst grass in fields, forests, and the like, but we shouldn't ignore them when with our furbabies. Wildflower toxicity of course depends on where you are and which flowers are nearby. To be on the safe side, don't just keep your kitty or pup from getting into flowers in gardens and the like, but also keep them from chewing on and ingesting random wildflowers that you find popped up here, there, and everywhere.

Thoroughly Poetic Thankful Thimble Thursday

Welcome to Thursday! Let's get right to it with our rhyme for Angel Sammy's Thoroughly Poetic Thursday.

Our courteous host always shares a photo prompt to guide us. This week's prompt is this fun image here:

The children in that there photo prompt are quite clearly playing with marbles. Nonetheless, this photo immediately reminded me of how I used to enjoying playing jacks as a kid. You know, the game where you throw a little ball in the air and try to pick up as many of the little jacks before it hits the ground. Since that's what came to my mind, my poem turned into a story about the game of jacks. And, of course, I added a cat.

Jacks and Jill

Young Jill was a master at the game of jacks.
She never failed to go in with a winning plan of attack.
That is, until one fine day when Jill met her match,
Who came in the form of one cool cat.

On that day, Jill set up a game with her golden set of jacks.
She asked the other kids in the park who wanted to give it a crack.
She knelt on the sidewalk with a braggart's grin on her face.
Rarely did a single soul dare enter her gaming space.

Not wishing to let her skill go unseen or go to waste,
Jill bounced the red ball and went after the jacks in a race.
She managed a mighty handful on just that one bounce of the ball.
She thought, That's why I'm the master of jacks, after all.

It was at that moment that Jill's worthy opponent entered the scene.
He was a ginger with hair more than a little bit pristine.
He also had whiskers, a tail, and pointy ears.
He was indeed one cool cat, did you hear?

As Jill gloated to the other children about her game,
The cool cat walked right up and began his ascent to fame.
He slapped the bouncy red ball right out of Jill's hand,
And then slapped away nearly every jack before the ball could land.

"Look there, Jill, that cat got more jacks than you!"
The children screamed and came running to get a better view.
One child said, "Come on, you two, play another round!"
Jill quickly took her turn, trying not to frown.

Jill and the cat played two rounds, three rounds, and then four more.
Every single time, the cool cat ended up with the winning score.
Jill soon felt quite unlucky and sad.
She had never played and looked so bad.

Jill was about to get up and depart the sad scene,
But the cool cat didn't give her the chance to leave.
The cat let out a mew and then licked its paw,
Right before climbing onto Jill's legs with a yawn.

Just like that, the cat sat right on down in Jill's lap,
And then it curled right on up and took a purring nap.
This cat doesn't even care that he beat me, Jill thought to herself.
Then her mind added, This cat put his pride away on very tall shelf.

Now smiling, Jill petted the cat and took it home after its nap.
And that was the beginning of a friendship true and strong, just like that.
And that was also how Jill learned that gloating did not win you a single friend.
Friends were won when you treated them kindly from the game's beginning to end.

None of that is to say the cool cat ever let Jill win.
He was simply a master of jacks and won ten times out of ten.
He never rubbed his victories in Jill's face, though, or anything like that.
He simply enjoyed playing, and then turning in for a nap.

Thursday is a great day for giving thanks, especially since it's the day of Brian's Thankful Thursday Blog Hop.

As always, Thimble is here to share her gratitude. Today, Thimble is thankful to have at least one kitty in the house she can sit next to.

We've mentioned before that none of the 6 kitties at our house really cuddle with each other. Many of them will sit in the same room as each other and even on the same furniture, but rarely with or next to each other. If there are any close encounters, it often involves Evan, simply because he's the most likely to accept another cat napping next to him without starting a fight. So, in these photos, Thimble took advantage of that.

To be honest, Thimble was also using Evan as protection in these photos. What you can't see is Eddy sitting just beneath Evan in these photos. Eddy likes to troll and pick on Thimble, but she won't usually do so if Evan is between them. Thimble is very grateful for that.

Tip of the Day

Today's tip is a common sense sort of one that you all certainly know, but we thought we'd mention it anyway. This tip is, for your furbaby's health and safety, to be aware of the various parts pieces of any toys and games you have in your house. Our poem today talked about the game of jacks, and that's an example of a toy or game with parts and pieces that could be dangerous if a curious cat or dog decided to chew on or swallow them. This could also go for rolling dice, other various pieces that go with certain board games, some children's toys such as Legos, and so on and so forth. If your cat or dog is a chewer, or if there is any concern at all that they might chew on or swallow toys or game pieces, then simply keep all such toys and games well out of your furbaby's reach. Don't leave such toys and games unattended, and pick them up and put them away when you are done with them. As always, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Woof Woof Wednesday

Pup Astrid knows she's not a cat, but she hopes all you cool cats out there don't mind seeing her every once in a while.

Can anyone see that sort of raw spot on the tip of Astrid's nose? She did that trying to use a rug to bury a bowl of her food that is apparently unacceptable. I was in the other room, and by the time I realized what she was doing and went over to stop her, she'd essentially given her nose a rug burn. She wasn't bothered by it at all. Actually, she does this somewhat regularly. Astrid is perhaps the pickiest furball in the house, and that's saying something, since she lives with 6 cats. Astrid doesn't only use rugs to bury food she doesn't like. She'll also grab nearby cat toys, her own toys, and pretty much any paper product she can find. If you leave a jacket somewhere nearby, she'll use that, too. Oh, and there's also that time she pulled a pillow from the couch to bury an unacceptable flavor of food. It's unfortunate that Astrid's absolute favorite food was discontinued, because watching her bury unworthy replacement foods is sort of a daily event at our house now.

Happy Wednesday!

Flashback Doodle of the Day

Today is the birthday of this here human's mom! That means it's the furbabies' beloved Gammy's birthday. We're sharing her birthday card from last year in honor of her birthday. She's of course getting a new birthday doodle this year, I just didn't have it completed yet when I wrote this post. Last year's card was inspired by my mom's crafty nature.

Happy birthday to my mom, the furbabies' wonderful Gammy!

Did you know?

Did you know that the act of an animal hiding their food is known as caching. In the wild this often involves putting debris such as dirt or leaves on top of the food. It can also mean more formally burying the food, like what squirrels do with acorns and other food sources in preparation for winter. The reason animals in the wild do this is to hide the food from other predators, as well as from the sun and other elements. This helps ensure that they can come back later when they are ready for their meal.

Domesticated animals might also bury, or cache, their food if they are not hungry, or if they are not comfortable eating the food at that very moment. Even animals like Astrid burying a food she's expressed dislike for could still be doing so to hide it from others. After all, Astrid lives with 6 cats, and sometimes she decides at a later time that a previously unworthy food is actually okay to eat. So, if you see your furbaby burying their food, it might simply be because they're not hungry or otherwise not ready to eat it just yet. Of course, if your cat or dog displays any such behaviors in a concerning way, or if their appetite changes, of course discuss this with a veterinarian.

Guests on Tuesday

As has been evidenced by a couple of our recent posts, I recently did an unofficial and rather low quality photo shoot of my parents' cats when I visited their house. Want to see my parents' two biggest cats together? They're both handsome fellas, and they're both over 20 lbs.

Say hello to Trapper and Foggy! Some of you might remember these boys, as they've both been on our blog before. Strangely enough, despite what that photo there might suggest, these two big boys don't eat a whole lot. Neither of them comes running when the food bowls are filled. So, how did they get to be over 20 lbs? Well, they do like lounging about just as they're doing above, so that might have something to do with it. Honestly, I love hugging both of these big boys, because there's just so much of them to love. Even so, both my parents and myself try to get these boys to play more in order to help them lose weight, but they're just not that into moving around a whole lot.

You know what, how about one more candid shot of these two boys with one of their sisters? Let's add Gilly to the mix now.

First of all, do you like Foggy's yawn in that there photo? As for Gilly, who is in terrible lighting and refused to look at the camera, she kind of looks like a big cat here, but she's mostly fur. She's only something like 8 lbs. Her insane fuzziness makes her look deceptively large. Oh, and she's a total daddy's girl. She has my dad wrapped around all four of her fuzzy little paws.

Happy Tuesday!

Flashback Doodle of the Day

Today's flashback doodle takes place in a weird, wacky, whimsical sort of garden I scribbled up last year. Though it's a weird one, I remember really enjoying creating this doodle.

Did you know?

Yesterday we mentioned how a cat grooms after eating in order to remove the scent of their prey from themselves, which in turn keeps other predators from preying on the cat because of the scent of the prey they consumed. Today, how about we mention a couple of other reasons why a cat might lick themselves? It goes without saying that general grooming is of course the primary reason for a cat licking themselves. The papillae, or spikes, on their tongue help them remove loose hair and other debris off of their fur.

Aside from the aforementioned obvious grooming, why else might a cat lick themselves? One reason is to help them cool down. This is because evaporation of saliva on the fur can help a cat feel cooler. Cats might also very well lick themselves for any number of behavioral reasons. For example, cats might lick themselves when stressed or nervous, some of them even anxiously grooming enough to cause bald spots. Another behavioral purpose for a cat's licking is social grooming, or allogrooming, during which a cat licks another cat it is close to or trusts. This type of social grooming helps build and reinforce relationships between cats. Your kitty's tongue and grooming sessions can have many purposes. If you notice any abnormal grooming, of course discuss this with a veterinarian.

Mancat Monday Bloopers

Evan is the mancat of the day, of course, and on this Mancat Monday he decided to share some of his recent bloopers. After all, what better way to kick off the week than some photos gone wrong?

Evan hopes these bloopers helped your week start off well! Happy Monday!

Flashback Doodle of the Day

Today's flashback doodle from last year takes us to a bakery. Help yourself to some sugary goodness.

We will be back to our usual doodle schedule, with far more new doodles than flashbacks, pretty soon. I've been resting my hand and wrist due to carpal/cubital tunnel syndrome, and it's really starting to feel much better. So, the new doodles I've been slowly but surely working on will all be ready soon.

Did you know?

Do you know why you so often see cats bathing after eating? Cats are predators, but in part due to their size they are also sometimes prey to certain species. And that is one reason why cats often bathe immediately after eating. Bathing after eating can help a cat remove the scent and remnants of their prey, or meal, from them. This helps ensure that other predators don't smell the cat's prey and thereby prey on the cat who ate it and smells like it. In other words, bathing after eating is often a self preservation tactic employed by cats. This is especially the case for cats out in the wild, but domesticated cats in our homes have largely maintained this instinct.
